Please be aware that the Heartland Humane Society
has a very limited physical facility/shelter at this time
that can only house a small number of cats.
We rely on our Foster Caregivers to provide homes
for some of the cats and all of the dogs that come under
our care.
We also post Lost/Missing pets & Found
animals on this site in hopes of finding their owners or
a new home.
Feel free to contact us by phone or by
email.
About
Us & How We Are Funded
The
Heartland Humane Society is a Private NonProfit
501(c)3 corporation governed by a volunteer
Board of Directors. As a non-profit
corporation we rely mainly on private
donations. We generate funds through our
Annual
Paw Partner fees,
Adoption
program, Fundraising events, Sales of
T-shirts, etc. All fees go towards spaying
or neutering, general & emergency medical
care, food & shelter for the animals that come
under our care, and fees associated with
administering these programs.
The
Yankton Area Humane Society was established as a
non-profit organization in 2000 by a dedicated
group of volunteers who came together to improve
the lives of homeless and abused animals. By
2006, planning began for a permanent shelter
building, as a Board of Directors was formed and
the name was changed to Heartland Humane Society
to include Yankton, Vermillion, Hartington, and
the surrounding communities. Through the
continued support from all our members, donors,
& volunteers; HHS now has a designated
building fund to continue with our goal of a
physical shelter. In the meantime, the
temporary office will serve nicely for meetings &
administrative functions.
FAQ's:
Are
you different from Animal Control?
YES. Although
both organizations are committed to animal welfare; we have
different missions and jurisdictions. Animal Control departments
usually receive funds from their respective City Government
through taxes to provide animal control services within city
limits. Whereas, HHS is Non-Profit and we are not
constrained within a city limits. We provide services in
not only in Yankton County, Clay County, and Cedar County, NE;
but also the surrounding areas.
Can
you receive my surrendered animal if I wanted to drop it
off?
NO!
Unfortunately, we are a limited admissions facility and only
have room to house cats at our current facility. Dogs must be
housed in foster homes, therefore require an appointment to
arrange for foster placement. Please call our
office if you are needing assistance in finding a home for an
animal. We will check into our Foster Network to see
if someone could take an animal in until we are able to find a
permanent home for them.
*Sometimes
we are unable to assist in the ways that we would like to due to
lack of resources, funds, & limited number of Foster
Homes. The number of animals that we can help depends
on the number of volunteer Foster Homes.*
Are
my contributions tax deductible?
YES. The
Heartland Humane Society is a private Non Profit organization,
incorporated in South Dakota, and fully qualified as a 501(c)(3)
under the IRS code. Your contributions are deductible for the
year in which they are made, to the extent of the law.
Where
do your animals come from?
We
try to help the homeless, abused, neglected, and stray
animals of the area. Some
of the animals that we receive are surrendered by their owners,
who can no longer have pets or do not want them for
various reasons. Some of the animals are found
wandering or lost. We also have received unwanted
puppies or kitties from owner's that did not spay/neuter their
own pet, and unfortunately, entire
litters have been found on other people's properties or dumped
in ditches.
Do
you have Adoption Fees?
Yes,
Adoption Fees help offset the costs of the animal's food,
shelter, and medical expenses while under Heartland Humane
Society's care. Additional donations are always
welcome and accepted ~ See our Wish List for items we are
currently need.
