Questions to ask yourself BEFORE adopting a pet.

Please be aware that the Heartland Humane Society has a very limited physical facility/shelter at this time that can only house a small number of cats.

We rely on our Foster Caregivers to provide homes for some of the cats and all of the dogs that come under our care.

We also post Lost/Missing pets & Found animals on this site in hopes of finding their owners or a new home.

Feel free to contact us by phone or by email.

~Note from an adopted dog~

I rescued a human today. Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them. As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one. I rescued a human today.

Hello to Everyone at HHS,

I just wanted to let you know how Mae Mae is doing and to say THANK YOU for letting Curt and I take her home! We ended up moving to a house just outside of town a few weeks after we got her, and Mae Mae loves being able to run around outside. She is doing excellent on training and learning more every day. There were a few chewing incidents at first, but our house and things have been "toddler-proofed" now. :) We love her hilarious personality and endless energy. She is a great dog and we cannot thank you enough for everything you do!Thanks a ton,

Ally, Curt, and Mae Mae

Leo is adjusting very well in his new home!

"I love it when my daddy runs water in the bath tub for me or just lets the faucet drip so I can play in it.  He has been pretty good for my daddy,  I have gotten into trouble for tipping over the Christmas tree and tearing up the house I just cant help my self I get so excited sometimes,  I think its ok cause daddy likes to watch me and talks to me  I think I chewed on some cords but I learn fast and daddy loves me."

We traveled to Yankton from Rapid City to adopt a dog.  We watched petfinder.com to find the perfect companion when we were ready to have another pet in the house.  We traveled because we wanted a rescue dog and had specific requests and there were no available female Daschunds closer. We set up a Sunday morning meeting but got into Yankton earlier than expected so we requested an evening meet and greet.  We appreciated the understanding and willingness to adjust.  We met Dixie and were shocked at her enthusiasm to meet us.  We had just lost our 17 year old daschund so canine activity was foreign to us. Dixie has made an easy transition to our family and home.  She is a proud member of our family and continually makes us happy that we made the trip to meet her.  She fits right in and she also believes that she made a good decision to come home with us.  She is a very happy dog who seems to just love life.  After being without a companion to greet us when we walk in the door, we do again feel needed when we walk through the door to see a wagging tail.  All of us in the Sahli family would like to say thank you for your efforts in matching us all together.

Just wanted to give you an update. Bella is doing great!! Tia & Bella had some bonding time in the back seat on the way home. Mostly consisted of Bella sleeping and Tia staring at her. Hahah! When we got home they had fun playing together. Tia would bring over one of her toys and wait til Bella grabbed on, then they played tug of war for a long time. Tia knows she is little and would barely pull and let Bella pull with all her might. Then Tia would lay on her back and they would play that way. I guess Tia wanted to be on her level. She hasn't had any accidents, yet. :) Brian set his alarm in for the middle of the night to let them out to potty. Everytime we go out she knows to potty right away. She is so sweet and cuddly! This morning he put her in bed with me and she made those groining noises and snuggled in right under my neck. We are sure smitten by her!!!! Its pretty cold out this morning Brian said he would wait til lunch then let them play outside this afternoon.

I just wanted to update you on how I am doing.  I have learned some new tricks like dancing pretty, rolling over, shaking and high five!  I am still working on my house training however, I just don't like to go in the back yard so my human parents take me on a lot of walks, but I'm getting better. I am still working on walking on the leash without pulling but I just can't help myself, I have to smell everything. I don't like to be put in my kennel when my parents go to work but they are very patient with me. I have become a big Green Bay Packers fan and love to watch the games with my dad. I just got spayed but I did not let that slow me down any. I love to play with other dogs, big and small, and chasing squirrels. I also like playing with people... except my grandpa - i growl at him for fun. You took such good care of me at HHS when I had no family, and now that I have a forever home, I want you to know how much I appreciated your being there when I needed you. Happy Holidays and Thank you from the bottom of my paws!

We would like to give a very special thanks to the Heartland Humane Society in Yankton, SD.  We adopted Tigger about a week ago and she is doing great!  Heartland was very helpful and caring with helping us pick a pet cat for our family.  Our children love and adore her from the second we brought her home.  She has her own cute little personality, she loves attention and loves to be held and loved.  She is a very active cat who can definitely keep up with our boys.  She is a wonderful addition to our home, and completes our family.  We are very pleased and highly recommend this organization.  Their love and care and compassion for animals is just totally amazing, so thank you for all your help and very deep thanks for such a wonderful addition to our family!  She will be taken care of and loved forever...Thank you so much...The Lewis family, Joshua, Nikkole, Brady, Caleb.....and Tigger.

Beethoven - now called "Lucky" is doing very well!  He has learned his new name and is adjusting to the farm life very well!
He is such a sweetie!  He has such a huge gentle personality - he loves to play fetch and just overall loves all the new attention he is getting.  He loves to be combed and loves his belly rubbed! He is so gentle and so playful and always eager to please!  He's definitely getting his first taste of treats - ice cream, peanut butter and jelly toast, etc.....and is putting on some weight!  His tail is always wagging which means he loves his new home!  He's been such a great dog to have - and as much as he needed us, we needed him too!  March was very hard on my husband and I with losing both St. Bernard's - "Lucky" has been good therapy for us! I am so glad "Lucky" found us!  He is one happy fella!

Just wanted to let you know that Alli is a keeper! Over the last two weeks
Willow and her have worked it out. They are spending their days playing out
in the yard together just as happy as can be, and snuggling up to one
another on their bed at night. Yea! Despite the rough 1st week of her trying
to find her place in the group, she has quickly fit into our pack almost as
if I'd raised her from a puppy. So cool!
She really loves her all her squeaker toys, and has gotten pretty good at fetch. When I have to work, or do odd jobs around the house she helps by shadowing me. I also found she likes to run along side my bike, so we've been working out together on the nicer days.

Here are some photos of Alli’s first visit to the Atlantic ocean in North Carolina.  She’s doing well....her and Willow are almost inseparable now. She’s getting pretty good at walking on a leash and learning her basic obedience commands quite quickly. We’ve been enjoying her sweet nature and can’t believe what a perfect match she’s been for our family. Thanks so much to you all for helping me find the dream dog I was looking
for. :-)

We are so happy with Ebony, she is a truly full of life young puppy. Day by day my children are getting involved with her, and is amazing to discover how each of them interact with her. We went to Colorado for summer vacation, and Ebony came with us. It was a full experience for the whole family, where all of us had  a  chance to know how to share a vacation time with our pet.  We had a great time and a collection of anecdotes from Ebony

I'm not good at writing, but really want to say thank you for finding Mike & Fiona for me.  I did not know how much I needed the strength and structure of a family (pack) until we spent time together.  They say I am very bright and I now know so much more! The garden is huge and I have an inside/outside kennel and go with Mike & Fiona every day - I love the car and we all travel well together. My new sister, Penny, is always good fun, even when she bosses me around! I still have my toy you gave me before we left Yankton and apart from missing tail and ear, it is holding up well.  It was a great comfort to me when I first got here.  Thank you for caring about me and finding me a great home.  I will look forward to showing it to you when you come and visit.  Lots of Love, Blake (alias Trooper)

Dora has learned so much from when she was a puppy. She loves to play fetch and likes lots of exercise.  She loves water so we usually give her a little swimming pool full of water in the summer months so she can take a dip to cool off when ever she wants to. She loves to bury her toys and then dig them back up to retrieve them. We enjoy having her as our pet and just seeing the new things she learns everyday and how much fun it has been watching her grow.
