Picking the right pet
We encourage you to do your research before adopting a pet. Different types, breeds and ages require different time commitments and training.
Some great resources are below:
For RENTERS
If you rent, you are responsible for knowing your pet policies and providing proof of permission prior to adoption. Please chat with your rental manager prior to contacting Heartland Humane Society.
STEP 1 - The Adoption Application
Ready to adopt? Start by visiting our available pets page and clicking the Adoption Application link to get pre-approved!
Our quick and easy application helps us learn what you’re looking for so we can help match you with the perfect pet for your home and lifestyle. Whether you already have your eye on someone special or need help finding “the one,” we’re here to help make great matches for both pets and people.
Applications can be completed online, at home, or right at the shelter. Live out of town? Get a head start online anytime!
Questions? Contact Janette at adopt@sdheartlandhumanesociety.com or call 605-664-4244.
And yes — we DO accept walk-in adoptions during business hours!
Step 2 - Meet our Pets
Most of our adoptable pets can be visited during normal business hours. Some pets are living in foster homes, so appointments are required to meet foster animals.
Have a dog at home? Bring them along for a meet-and-greet! We also encourage all household members to come meet your potential new family member. Current pets in the home should be up to date on vaccinations. Please note: we do not adopt puppies or kittens into homes with unaltered or unvaccinated pets.
We believe adopters should spend quality time with a pet before making a decision, so we offer private meet-and-greet spaces at the shelter. Plan to spend at least 30 minutes visiting with your future best friend.
Hoping to adopt the same day? Please arrive at least 45 minutes before closing to allow time for paperwork. Adoption appointments end at 4:15 PM Tuesday–Friday and 11:45am on Saturdays. Sunday adoption appointments are available by request.
Step 3 - Adopt your Favorite
Every pet at Heartland Humane Society receives veterinary care, age-appropriate vaccinations, and spay/neuter services before adoption. Adoption fees help offset the cost of care and include vaccines, deworming, nail trims, flea treatment, microchipping with international registration, a 14-day medical exchange policy, a free wellness exam at participating veterinary clinics, and helpful take-home care guides. Additional donations are always appreciated and directly support future animals in need.
Fall in love today? Pets can go home the very same day you meet them! Need a minute to think? As for a 24-hour hold once you’ve met the pet to sleep on it and make a final decision.
For safety, all adopted pets must leave HHS on a leash/collar or in a carrier. If you don’t have one at the time of adoption, one will need to be purchased before your new family member heads home.
